A tika box is a container to store the red powder used for marking the forehead of Hindus known as a Tika mark or Bindi. These boxes are typically made of teakwood, as this one is, because teakwood is a strong, long lasting material that resists moisture damage and insects. The top of this box spins on a single original nail. The craftmanship on this piece shows its hand-made nature as well as the natural patina of regular use. It is circa 1950's. This box represents an interesting part of Hindu culture and makes a unique conversation piece on a shelf or desk.
